Apples - About

BACKGROUND

Apples are the largest export product for Freshco. Freshco exports over 20,000 tonnes world-wide during the season which lasts from March through to August. Freshco is one of the largest exporters of apples in New Zealand with the focus on delivering premium quality apples world-wide. Freshco aims to maximise the products potential through intensive market research and product management through the supply chain, to maximise the return to the grower.

GROWING REGIONS

Freshco apples are grown in Hawkes Bay, Nelson and Central Otago.

Hawkes Bay is situated on the lower east coast of New Zealand's North Island and opens onto the Pacific Ocean. The regions rich alluvial plains and warm climates provide the ideal growing conditions for over 50% of New Zealand's apple production. Freshco Hawkes Bay

Nelson regularly tops the annual sunshine figures in New Zealand and its fertile hillsides and plains are watered by some of the clearest rivers in New Zealand. Nelson’s crisp winter days provide ideal weather conditions for good fruit set and the long summer days makes for sweet, crisp apples. Freshco Nelson

Otago was one of the first growing areas established in New Zealand because of the unique soil dynamics and suitable climatic conditions. Central Otago is ideal for producing an excellent export product, that is OF high value to major overseas customers.
